Community Quilt
Four Rivers Counseling’s “Community Quilt” is a core business principle that was introduced to Jenny when she was a new small business owner in the 2022 Martinsville-Henry County StartUp Program, and continues to be a philosophy Four Rivers Counseling upholds.
This philosophy of community support means that we are not alone, we can grow together to lead better lives, and that making dreams come true is very possible in our community with the support from other like-minded, diverse and dedicated community members, just like you.
The “Community Quilt” Approach
Four Rivers Counseling remains dedicated to reducing the stigma of mental health and promoting greater support for others on their journey of emotional and physical health and wellness. 4RC’s “Community Quilt” continues to strive to reduce barriers to counseling and other wellness services, to reduce mental health stigma around these topics, and promote positive support and connection for our neighbors in our rural community.
Four Rivers Counseling believes in promoting community spirit, strength, safety, culture and connection for clients, and our neighbors, just like you. If you would like to find out more about collaborating on a community project, please contact 4RC today. Together, we can make a difference in the wellness of our community.
Community Quilt Collaborations
The goal of Four Rivers Counseling’s “Community Quilt” is to reduce mental health stigma and raise positive, mental health awareness in our community through a multifaceted approach that involves education, awareness, and open communication.
Four Rivers Counseling organizes free in-person sessions, and via live-streaming on Facebook, provides comprehensive, progressive mental health and wellness workshops, to educate the community about mental health, holistic health, and promote positive mental health awareness and support.
Community Quilt Workshops
Four Rivers Counseling’s collaborative community workshops and campaigns address topics including suicide prevention, mental health awareness, meditation and mindfulness, life vision, positive body awareness and wellness, grief and loss, manifesting dreams, self-kindness and self-confidence.
Several extensive workshops have been co-collaborated with Samantha Turner, MPH, RDN, and CEO of Oakstone Health and Nutrition to address topics related to the mind & body connection between physical and emotional health, including positive body image, healthy eating habits, and tools creating a more balanced approach for mental and physical wellness, especially during times of stress.
These free, donation-based workshops are provided in-person, and multiple platforms including on-line on Facebook, while being presented live at its physical location, including the local YMCA and most recently at our local coffeehouse, The Ground Floor.
Community Counseling Scholarships
For some, financial barriers can make licensed counseling difficult to pursue. Because of this, Four Rivers collaborates with other community leaders, health professionals, community groups, for-profits and local nonprofit business leaders to help our community foster a safe, healthy environment where individuals can seek help for their holistic mental health concerns.
Four Rivers Counseling collaborated with the YMCA, Sarah Moorefield, parent of Angelina Cobbler Moorefield, and participated in a large, community Memorial Walk, alongside the Harvest Moon Run, in memory of Angelina Moreton Cobbler. Four Rivers Counseling also collaborated with Pam Wright, parent of Ian Wright, and the Smith River Sports Complex, to coordinate a Memorial Tree Planting and private, family Memorial Service for Ian Wright. Four Rivers Counseling also established a non-profit, tax deductible, Four Rivers Counseling Scholarship Fund, which was originally established by the families of Angelina and Ian.
Sarah Moorefield and Pam Wright, parents of Angelina and Ian, continue to help the Four Rivers Counseling Scholarship Fund by overseeing the distribution of the Fund to support the youth in our community and reduce barriers to counseling due to expensive co-pays.
Community Gatherings
Four Rivers Counseling also collaborated with multiple community partners for its first Mental Health Walk, “Fighting Battles You Can’t See,” which was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the YMCA, Henry County Parks and Recreation, and Henry County Public Schools.
The Mental Health Walk was free for all Martinsville City and Henry County Public Schools, students, administration and staff, as well as YMCA members. Students completed non-Beta Community Service hours by creating positive mental health posters on display for the Mental Health Walk, as well as participating in the Walk.
At Four Rivers Counseling’s Mental Health Walk, several children, tween, teens, 4RC and YMCA staff, spoke on themes of the Walk, including the importance of hope, kindness, safety, love and support to promote mental health awareness and mental health de-stigmatization in our community. A total of 25 individuals participated in the 3.0 Walk at the Smith River Sports Complex, along the Smith River, which also included a moment of silence and recognition of the Ian Wright Memorial Tree.
